The Pioneer in Modern Chinese Geography
Xu Xiake (1587–1641), who lived in the Ming Dynasty, was a
famous geographer, traveller, and writer.
Xu travelled across China for 30
years, covering many of the present
China’s cities and provinces, such as
Beijing, Henan, Guangdong and Yunnan.
He travelled mostly on foot, climbing 72
mountains and 15 hills, crossing 10 caves
(洞穴), 38 wells and 25
rivers.
Xu was a pioneer in modern Chinese
geography. He wrote many travel diaries on famous
mountains and other places, with a total of 600,000
Chinese characters.
After his death, these diaries were compiled (编
写) into a book called The Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake.
It is the first known record of modern Chinese
