Tu Youyou
Tu Youyou is the first Chinese
Nobel Prize winner in Physiology
or Medicine. She was born and
raised in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China.
Since 1965 she has been working at
China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. She said she chose to
be a medical researcher due to her strong interests, curiosity, and a
wish to seek new medicines for patients.
She once told her own story, “I unfortunately got TB (肺结核)
at the age of sixteen and had to take a two-year break and receive
treatment at home before I could go back to my studies again. This
experience led me to make a decision to choose
medical research for my advanced education
and career. If I could learn and develop
medical skills, I could not only keep myself
healthy but also cure many other patients.
So after graduation from high school, I
became a student at the Medical School of
Peking University.”
This is Tu Youyou. What a great scientist!
