Peking Opera

Peking Opera is a national treasure of China. It
has a history of over 200 years. In 1790 the four big

Huiban opera groups entered the capital to celebrate

the birthday of Emperor (皇帝)
Qianlong. It originated from

Kunqu and other operas.

There are four main
character (角色) types, Sheng (male), Dan

(female), Jing (painted face, male) and Chou

(clown), on the basis of gender, age, and
personality. Mei Lanfang was one of the most

famous Dan actors.
The Jing with facial painting is the

most special character in Peking Opera.

The facial painting is also a kind of art
which stands for the personality of the Jing.

The main performing skills are singing,
speaking, acting and martial arts.

In some primary and secondary schools,

students can take Peking Opera courses in
order to keep this great traditional Chinese

culture and treasure alive.
