                                                     The Silk Road

The Silk Road is the ancient trade road connecting

China and Europe. There are three Silk Roads, the Northern

Silk Road, the Southern Silk Road and the Silk Road on
the sea. The Northern Silk Road starts from Chang’an

(now Xi’an) to Dunhuang and goes west to Europe. The

Southern Silk Road starts from Sichuan province and
goes south to India. The Silk Road on the sea starts from

Guangzhou to southeast Asian countries and Europe. The

Silk Road is now in the World Heritage List (世界遗产名录)
                         of UNESCO (联合国教科文组织).

                              Culture of the Silk Road
The Silk Road contributed greatly to the cultural

exchange between China and the West. From the second

century BC to the fifteenth century AD, great civilisations
like China, India, Greece and Rome made exchanges along

the Silk Road. The Silk Road is called the great “Cultural
Bridge” between Asia and Europe. With this bridge, the Four

Great Inventions of ancient China (paper making, printing,

gunpowder and compass) were introduced to the West. This
greatly sped up the development of the entire world.
